What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common and dangerous health problem that can significantly increase your risk of developing heart conditions and other systemic diseases, and can even be deadly. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the soft tissues in the back of the throat collapse during sleep, preventing the sufferer from breathing properly throughout the night.

Signs & Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Some common signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include (most occur during sleep):

  • Loud, frequent snoring
  • Choking or gasping for air
  • Sleeping and breathing disruptions
  • Frequent urination
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Chronic headaches and migraines
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Mood swings
  • Insomnia or nightmares
  • Morning dry mouth

Health Consequences

When the only time the body can truly heal and repair itself is during sleep, it’s no wonder that patients suffering from sleep apnea will experience a slow decline in their overall health. When you have trouble breathing throughout the night, the result is low blood oxygen levels, which can contribute to the development of serious heart conditions. Patients with sleep apnea are also five times more likely to get in a car accident after falling asleep at the wheel.

Sleep apnea increases your risk for:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Heart disease (cardiovascular disease)
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Asthma
  • Acid reflux

Risk Factors for Sleep Apnea

Some common characteristics and lifestyle habits that increase your risk of developing sleep apnea include:

  • Male
  • Overweight
  • Over age 40
  • Large neck
  • Narrow airway
  • Use of alcohol
  • Use of sedatives
  • Family history

Sleep Apnea Treatment without a CPAP Machine!

The “gold standard” for sleep apnea treatment today is still considered the CPAP machine. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and is a machine that forces air in and out of the lungs through a small face mask. You must wear your CPAP all night, every night. CPAPs are highly effective, but only when used correctly. Many patients find CPAPs intolerable because they are bulky, invasive and loud, and prevent the user from finding restful sleep. Kind of defeats the purpose, right? (Not to mention the difficulties in portability. Forget about camping!)

Thankfully, medical and dental professionals have joined forces in creating a much less invasive solution with oral appliance therapy. Oral appliance therapy uses a small, custom made oral appliance that is similar to a mouth guard that you wear during sleep. The device is specially designed to fit your mouth for the most comfortable fit, and your individual needs.

Sleep apnea appliances are designed to gently shift the lower jaw forward, preventing the airway from collapsing and allowing the user to breathe comfortably throughout the night. No more obnoxious CPAP machine. With oral appliance therapy, you are free to sleep, breathe, and travel comfortably without being tied to a machine and an electrical outlet.

Sleep apnea treatment with oral appliance therapy is:

  • Non-invasive and discreet
  • Convenient to use
  • Small and portable
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Affordable alternative
  • Highly effective
  • CPAP alternative

If any of the above information sounds familiar, or you’ve already been diagnosed with sleep apnea and you’re seeking a non-CPAP alternative treatment, we would love to speak with you about oral appliance therapy. We would be happy to help you take control of your sleep apnea – take back your nights, your days, and your quality of life!
